Homeopathy Homeopathy is a gentle, but powerful system of healing used for more than 200 years and now practised around the world in 40 countries. It is part of mainstream medicine in many countries and more than 30 million people in Europe use homeopathic remedies. It is suitable for everyone, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, babies and children. In my experience, homeopathy has helped patients of all ages with a wide variety of health problems, including many long-term conditions that do not respond well to prescription drugs. Like many homeopaths, I decided to undertake training after experiencing the benefits of homeopathy myself and also seeing improvements in the health of family members and friends, who sought homeopathic treatment for a variety of conditions, ranging from menstrual and menopausal problems to hay fever, psoriasis and stiffness of the joints. What happens at a consultation? When a patient comes for a consultation, I focus on them as an individual, taking time to listen to them and assess all their symptoms, physical as well as emotional. I also inquire about their previous medical history and family illnesses, to gain a whole picture. This detailed consultation enables me to get to the root of their problems. Homeopathic medicines are chosen to treat the whole person, because homeopaths believe the mind and body operate as one, and you cannot treat one part of the body without affecting the whole. Medicines are selected to fit all the characteristics of the patient, so physical disorders are considered in relation to the individual’s mental and emotional state. Potentially, homeopathy can help patients with a wide range of conditions, both acute and chronic. Illnesses seen in my own clinic include recurrent infections (such as colds, tonsillitis, cystitis), skin conditions, menstrual and menopausal problems, chronic fatigue, migraine, and stress related symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia. Patients often feel a sense of wellbeing, optimism and relaxation after taking their homeopathic medicine. The speed with which you feel relief will depend on the condition being treated. In acute ailments, this can be very fast indeed. In more chronic conditions, your recovery rate will depend on the nature and duration of the illness and on your individual vitality. Seeing your GP Homeopathic remedies can be taken alongside drugs prescribed by your doctor and will not interfere with their beneficial action. Patients should maintain a good relationship with their GP, who will be able to arrange any tests or X-rays, if needed.
